THE SHERLOCKOLOGY REVIEW OF 2011

image

As we come to the end of 2011, we thought it would be fitting to look back on the year whose conclusion will bring us the return of Sherlock to UK screens tomorrow night, and detail the coming about of our website Sherlockology.com, dedicated to this most remarkable series.

Our story, like many Sherlock fans out there, started back in July 2010 when a very exciting trailer was broadcast on BBC One. With a soundtrack of Muse, amidst a backdrop of black cabs, mobile phones and a 21st Century London, a new incarnation of Sherlock Holmes, in the form of rising star Benedict Cumberbatch, practically exploded onto our screens. An instant hit and with only three ninety minute episodes to recommend it, it achieved cult status almost immediately, going on to win numerous awards come the awards season this year.

SHERLOCK SERIES 2 AND COMPLETE SERIES BOXSET ART

Via amazon.co.uk, the art for the DVD of Series 2 of Sherlock has crept online. Also on display is the likely temporary but close to final art for the Complete Series One and Two.

Information on extra features on the Series 2 set, or if there is anything additional in the Complete Set, are still unknown.

The BBFC ratings symbols are likely temporary - the 15 certificate on the Complete Series set is unusual.

Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle Books: Last Nights Global Sherlock Holmes Actors Debate A Big Hit → mxpublishing.tumblr.com

mxpublishing:

Last night’s December global debate on the actors that have played Holmes and Watson was an absolute treat and loads of fun. Fans from 13 countries including Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Italy, France, UK, USA and Germany joined a panel of experts to shout out for their favourite Holmes (big thanks to the Baker Street Babes , Sherlockology and I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere in particular). My highlights included;

  • the coining of Robert Downey Junior’s portrayal of Holmes as a ‘Hot Mess’ (thanks author Tracy Revels for that one)
  • a healthy debate on the imaginary ‘bromance’ between the BBC Sherlock characters
  • the suggestions of Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara [The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo link with Holmes] as frontrunners should a female Holmes ever be cast
  • a heart felt shout out for Jeremy Brett from author Charlotte Walters
  • Steve Boothe from the USA dialling in via the webinar iPhone app as he couldn’t wrestle the PC away from his kids
  • Wonderful and often excited and passionate contributions from the fans (thanks Yui, Young Wei, Alice, Sarah, Christina, Lilith, Hannah, Valentina, Steve and everyone else)

We hope to clean up the recording (live from so many countries via the internet was challenging) to release it for next week. In the meantime you can join the Facebook Page and the Slideshare Site where we have bios of the panel that took part and reaction from the fans and where we will release the recording and share info of the next one in January. Hosted by MX Publishing.

HAMLET AT THE YOUNG VIC – REVIEW

image

An intriguing interpretation of William Shakespeare’s masterpiece, the Young Vic’s current presentation of Hamlet features astonishing work from all the players, not least Michael Sheen in the titular role, and a heartbreaking turn from Sherlock’s Vinette Robinson as Ophelia.

SHERLOCK AT THE BFI – SCREENING AND Q&A REPORT

image

We’ve already written a review of Sherlock – A Scandal in Belgravia, but we were focused more on critical thinking and presentation of the episode, rather than writing a report on the screening itself. While nowhere near the scale of the British Premiere of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that we attended at the same screen at the National Film Theatre, this remained an intimate and hugely fun event. In attendance were numerous cast and crew, including Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, Sue Vertue, Beryl Vertue, David Arnold, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott, Louise Brealey, Una Stubbs and Lara Pulver.
