SDCC 2012: Martin Freeman in Plastic - The toys of The Hobbit

Now that San Diego Comic Con has rolled around around again, we’re getting our first look at many toys and tie in merhcandise for The Hobbit - and being the title character, Martin Freeman is everywhere, from Action Figures, to Lego, and a variety of other sizes inbetween! We’re collecting the best here, and updating as more are revealed.

As well as the limited edition ‘Invisible Bilbo’ figure available only at San Diego Comic Con 2012, more commonly available figures from the films are being released.

Available in both 3.75” and 6” scale, The Bridge Direct’s Bilbo Baggins action figures feature authentic details and styling that capture the title character from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Bilbo figures include Sting, scabbard, travel pack and canteen accessories.

    SRP: $7.99 & $14.99 Ages: 4+

A particular favourite are the Lego mini-figures from the company’s upcoming sets for the films. Pictured above are Gandalf and Bilbo. These figures are available as part of a set named ‘An Unexpected Gathering’, a environment set depicting Bag End that you can see exclusively over at theonering.net.

Moving up the pricing scale, WETA Workshop have numerous statues on display at their booth on the show floor, including this superb likeness of Martin as Bilbo. Cast in polystone in 1:6 scale [For the onscreen version of the characters, making this statue one of the smallest in the range of course!] the statue will be available to order from WETA’s online store in October. Pricing to be confirmed. We’ll update with official press shots when they are released.

As a final fun sign off to this feature, The Hobbit films aren’t the first cause for Martin Freeman to be immortalised in plastic, posable form of course. The 2005 adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy spawned a range of merchandise, and as the lead character Arthur Dent, Martin first debuted inside a cardboard and plastic blister pack on toy shop shelves [with towel accessory] to accompany the film’s release.
